Awarded the best video game ever (and it’s bound to divide)

To check it out in a list of 20 games, drawn up on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the gaming industry, is Dark Souls by From Software.

On the occasion of the Golden Joystick Awards, defined by the organizers as “the longest-running show in which the public votes”, it was awarded the best video game ever. The special recognition was given on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the video game industry, recognized as such by the release of the first commercially available video game: Computer Space, a cabinet launched in November 1971 that “represents the first time that a video game is never been played for money: the birth of videogames as a commercial industry “. The choice fell on a particularly popular title but, as always in these cases, it is destined to cause discussion.

Dark Souls best video game ever –

From the vote, Dark Souls was found to be the best video game of all time (Ultimate Game of All Time). The title, which crystallized and popularized the punitive action RPG formula known as soulslike inaugurated by Demon’s Souls, has beaten the likes of Doom, Metal Gear Solid, Super Mario 64, Pac-Man e Half-Life 2. A victory destined to cause discussion, both for the high-sounding names that come out of the beat, and for the poor accessibility of the winner: the Souls are known for their very high difficulty rate and this has often “condemned” them out of the mainstream world.

This the list full of candidates:

  • Dark Souls (Vincitori)
  • Doom (1993)
  • The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
  • Half-Life 2
  • Minecraft
  • Street Fighter II
  • Tetris
  • The Last of Us
  • Super Mario 64
  • Metal Gear Solid
  • Halo: Combat Evolved
  • Super Mario Bros. 3
  • Grand Theft Auto V
  • Portal
  • Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
  • Pac-Man
  • Super Mario Kart
  • Space Invaders
  • Sim City (1989)
  • Pokémon GO

From Software’s reaction –

“It is still incredible that users have chosen us among the nominated works, but it is a great honor,” commented on social media, as reported by Yahoo News, the creator and president of From Software (the home of Dark Souls) Hidetaka Miyazaki. With the usual thanks to Bandai Namco fans, colleagues and publishers, Miyazaki did not fail to look to the future. “At the time, the staff who had joined From Software were young and had just started their career as a game creator with Dark Souls; now they are growing and becoming the heart of our latest work, Elden Ring. In this sense, I am now deeply touched by the award. I will continue to make interesting and valuable games. I hope you can’t wait to try them out ”.

Voting criteria –

The candidate titles were fished from a shortlist of 150 video games, made up of the previous winners of the GOTY (Game of the Year award) awarded in the last 39 years by the Golden Joystick Awards, EDGE magazine’s 100 best video games ever and Retro Gamer magazine. The final shortlist of just 20 games was created by an expert jury composed of Katsuhiro Harada (Tekken), Debbie Bestwick MBE (Team17), Gary Penn (DMA Design, Grand Theft Auto), Keith Stuart, Keza MacDonald (The Guardian) , Shahid Ahmad (former head of Sony’s Strategic Content Division) and journalists from Edge, Retro Gamer, GamesRadar and other Future publications. The criteria they have been critical reception, legacy and influence, commercial success, social impact and subjective interpretation. The latter was then the definitive criterion for users who voted among the eligible candidates.
