Soaring registrations: scooters fly with the SH 300

Share 26,854 two-wheeled vehicles in April (+ 8.6% compared to 2018). In the first four months of the year, the Italian market reached 87,157 vehicles (+ 14.4% on 2018) with the 300-500 cc scooter segment marking a + 30.2%. The best sellers are confirmed Honda SH 300 (3,227 pieces) and the BMW R 1250 GS (1,957 pieces)

Registrations of motorized two-wheeled vehicles in April totaled 26,854 vehicles, equal to + 8.6% compared to the same month in 2018. Double-digit growth for motorcycles with 12,645 pieces equal to + 14.6%; while the scooter sector with 14,209 units achieved + 3.8%. The “fifties” also recovered significantly, totaling 1,724 registrations, equal to + 15.2%. The month of April develops about 12% of annual volumes in Italy. “The beginning of the seasonality of the market in April confirms a positive data which has now lasted for 9 consecutive months. In particular, the first 4 months of this year saw a balanced trend for both motorcycles and scooters. This means that the offer of two wheels is able to satisfy both the needs of sustainable mobility in our urban centers, and the passion that animates the choices of motorcycle models. We are confident that in the coming months the market will be consolidated for the whole year ”, says Andrea Dell’Orto, President of Confindustria ANCMA (National Association of Cycle Motorcycle Accessories).


In the first four months of 2019, the total of the Italian motorized two-wheeler market (registrations of scooters and motorcycles over 50cc, plus registrations of “fifty”) reaches 87,157 vehicles, with an increase of + 14.4% compared to the same time of last year. This trend derives from an excellent result in registrations with 81,737 units equal to + 15.3%, with motorcycles with 39,614 vehicles and + 15.5% respectively and scooters with 42,123 vehicles equal to + 15.2%. The “fifties” with 5,420 registrations and + 2.2%, thanks above all to electric vehicles which, thanks to the start of the incentives, have more than doubled volumes, totaling 871 units, just above last year’s volumes.


The analysis by displacement sees the consolidation of the central segment of scooters between 300 and 500 cc as the most important, with 16,959 units equal to + 30.2%. Following are the 125 cc scooters with 14,634 vehicles equal to + 13.6%. The category between 150 and 250 cc retreats and with 6,843 units marks a -2.4%; finally, there was substantial stability for maxi scooters over 500 cc, with 3,684 registrations and + 1%. The best sellers are confirmed Honda SH 300 (3,227 pieces), Honda SH 125 (2,946) and Piaggio Beverly 300 (2,906), followed by Honda SH 150 (2,657) and Yamaha XMax 300 (1,814).


In the motorcycle sector, models between 800 and 1000 cc accelerate with 11,383 units and + 26.7%. In second place vehicles over 1000 cc with 10,521 sales and + 4%; in third place are the motorbikes between 300 -600 cc with 6,830 pieces and + 20.9%. Motorbikes between 650 and 750 cc follow closely with 6,178 units and + 14.1% compared to 2018. 125 cc continue to grow with 3,826 units equal to + 24.9%; finally, the numbers of 150-250 cc with 876 bikes and -17.8% are rather marginal. The trend in the motorcycle segments highlights the road enduro cars with 14,652 units and + 22.8%, followed by the naked bikes which are also growing with 13,893 units equal to + 9.8%. At a distance, touring motorcycles in with 5,476 registrations and + 22.7%. Customs remained stable with 2,083 sales and + 0.5%; as well as sports cars with 1,900 bikes on the same levels as last year with + 0.4%; finally, supermotards with 1,112 pieces and + 38.1% are more than positive. The best-selling model is the BMW R 1250 GS (1,957 units), followed by Honda Africa Twin (1,387), Yamaha Tracer 900 (1,351), Benelli TRK 502 (1,188) and BMW R 1250 GS Adventure (1,118). Honda NC750X, Yamaha MT-07, Yamaha MT-09, Ducati Scrambler 800 and Kawasaki Z900 close the top ten.
