The great Spanish field hockey clubs join forces to defend their interests. Through the recently created Spanish Association of Field Hockey Clubs (Aechh), seven elite teams have created a lobby with which they trust to be able to add income by entering the economic distribution of the big tournaments. “Today we have no return,” denounces its president, Jaime Coghen, to 2Playbook.

The executive, brother of Olympic hockey champion Mercedes Coghen, acts on behalf of the current MGS League champion, Club de Campo Villa de Madrid (Ccvm), which completed a historic double with the victory of the women’s team in the Iberdrola League . Two competitions, with naming rights commercialized, but from which the clubs do not directly receive money.

“As the main actors in the film, we want to be involved in the economic distribution of the big tournaments,” says the president of the Aechh. There, they would enter the Copa del Rey, the Final Four and the MGS League itself. According to data from the Federation, its sponsorship income is around 416,000 euros, although it does not clarify which part is generated with these competitions and which by supporting the National Team.

CD Terrassa, Atlètic Terrassa, RC Polo de Barcelona, ​​Club Egara, Junior FC and SPV Complutense also participate in this negotiation. “Some more are expected to join soon,” says Coghen. The Magdalena Royal Tennis Society and the Sardinero HC, from Cantabria, as well as the Basque RC Jolaseta have shown their interest in entering.

“We understand that the federation has interests that are not the same as ours. Here’s a topic: you have some economic agents who are the ones who are generating the business, and others who are the ones who take advantage of what we produce ”, highlights the leader.

Hockey, a discipline that has brought great success to Spanish sport, continues to be an amateur. There are no prizes or billing for the competition: “All the expenses are borne by the clubs”, they remember. The budget of the hockey section of clubs like the Ccvm is around 500,000 euros per year.

Only in Europe, the EHL – the equivalent of the soccer Champions League – awards prizes to the finalists of the tournament and, an important point, provides aid to the clubs to cover travel expenses.

This is one of the keys that the association wants to work on. Not only does it seek to increase income to be even more competitive in order to end the Dutch tyranny on the European track record, it also joins forces with the aim of maximizing savings.

“One of the priorities is that the expenses are the minimum possible. We are going to act as a purchasing center for logistics.”, Advances the president of the association. And it is that, throughout the season, the clubs hire many services that, together, could be remarkably optimized.

Coghen explains that, unlike other great European powers, such as Belgium or the Netherlands, “here the distances are long.” This also results in the sports calendar, the Achilles heel of the clubs in recent years.

“International competitions are increasing a lot and this generates a collision with the national calendars of the clubs, we have been enduring this situation for years,” they lament from Aechh.

To put an end to this, the clubs of the main European leagues are replicating the Spanish model, creating associations and pressure groups that defend their interests in each country. Thanks to this, they are beginning to negotiate on the calendar, although “we know that it will be a slow process. Now, we are clear that the more united, the better ”.

Among the challenges to be addressed, the association has set itself as a mission “Shield a Spanish league calendar with a minimum of 25 weekends in the two windows: from September to December, and from February to June, where in turn you can play the play-offs and the European Hockey League (EHL) ”.

In Spain, the clubs are represented on the delegated commission and the board of directors of the Royal Spanish Hockey Federation (Rfeh). “That is not the problem, what you have to do is a previous job in which we are taken into greater consideration,” asks Coghen.

In search of a global association sponsorship

Could we have a hockey First Division run by the clubs? “In Germany this is already the case, but we are not planning to do anything like this right now,” the president replies. What the Aechh is already looking for is to create its own income with, for example, a global sponsor of the association.

Asked about the impact of Covid-19 on the clubs, Coghen assures that “there has been a small debacle in the short period, with the cancellation of last season, but all the clubs have been able to overcome it.” Therefore, the pandemic has not been as serious a collapse as it has happened in other sports.
